December 13th-15th | Brisbane (AUS)

WHAT HAPPENED

Australia performed well at home to top the medals table in Brisbane, with nine medals, including four gold. One week after coming second to New Zealand in the women’s team pursuit, UCI World Champions Australia evened the ledger, beating their rivals from across the Pacific. It was a similar scenario in the men’s team pursuit with UCI World Champions getting the better of New Zealand. Australia’s other two gold medals came in the Madison, with powerful performances which saw the men beat New Zealand into second place and the women win in front of France.

Other highlights of the racing in Brisbane included historical victories for Colombia in both the men’s and women’s keirin thanks to Kevin Santiago Quintero Chavarro and Martha Bayona Pineda.

Meanwhile Japan, traditionally a nation of sprinters, confirmed it is a force to be reckoned with in endurance events. After last week’s victory by Yumi Kajihara in the Women’s Omnium, Eiya Hashimoto finished third in the Men’s Omnium behind New Zealand’s Aaron Gate and Germany’s Roger Kluge. His medal came on top of his nation’s Men’s Team Sprint gold, which they won for the second consecutive weekend.
