History was made! On Sunday, at the age of just 22, Egan Bernal (Team Ineos) became the first Colombian (and South American) rider ever to win the Tour de France. His victory only really looked likely after Stage 19 was shortened due to poor weather conditions (hailstones) that made the last stretch of the route – including the final climb to Tignes – impassable. Until Bernal took control at the summit of Col d'Iseran, France's Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) had worn the leader's yellow jersey for the majority of the race (three days in the first week, then uninterrupted since 13 July). Despite harbouring genuine hopes this year, France will again have to wait before seeing one of their own win a Tour de France, something that has evaded them since Bernard Hinault's victory back in 1985. Team Ineos enjoyed further success with second place in the General Classification going to Bernal's British team-mate – and 2018 winner – Geraint Thomas, while the Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk (Team Jumbo - Visma) finished third.
