Three weeks after the announcement of the site that will host the Olympic BMX Racing and BMX Freestyle competitions in 2028 – the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area in Los Angeles (USA) – the site for the track cycling competitions has also been announced as part of the LA28’s updated venue plan. In four years' time, the Olympic Champions for track cycling will be crowned at the Velodrome in Carson, in the county of Los Angeles.
Built in 2004 and featuring a 250-metre track made from Siberian pine, the velodrome is a world-class facility located close to the velodrome – now demolished – that was the venue for the track cycling events at the Olympic Games Los Angeles 1984.
The Velodrome in Carson has already hosted numerous international competitions, including the 2004 UCI Junior Track World Championships, the 2005 UCI Track World Championships, the 2012 and 2017 UCI Para-cycling Track Cycling World Championships, and several rounds of the former UCI Track Cycling World Cup. The velodrome is also the training centre for the US national track team.
The Olympic hockey, rugby sevens and tennis competitions will be held within the same sport complex in Carson.
Consistent with LA28’s 2017 original bid plan, the Paralympic events for track cycling are also proposed for the Velodrome in Carson. The Paralympic venue plan will be confirmed at a later date subject to the approval of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board.
Track cycling has been on the programme of the modern Olympic Summer Games since they were first held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Para-cycling track joined the Paralympic programme in 1996 at Atlanta (USA).
